Workshops

During Friday afternoon, the 27th of august, there will be 4 workshops given within different areas of interest. Below you will find a brief description of each of the workshops. You will have the possibility to sign up for a workshop when register to the conference.

Successful Research Center
The purpose of this session is to present and discuss different models for research centers and what generic characteristics that is common for a successful centre.

A common way to carry out collaborative research is within the context of a research centre or a laboratory. Most universities around the world have different types of centers with focus on different scientific areas or industrial applications. Typically, researchers are employed by the university departments but work more or less of their time in projects within in a centre.  A centre can be managed and organized in many different ways.

This session provides a possibility for research leaders and researchers to discuss different centre models with and what makes a centre successful. Focus will be on topics like:

The workshop will involve presentations of a number of centers as a start for the discussion.

Purpose: to present and discuss different models for research centers and what generic characteristics that is common for a successful centre.

Aim:  To identify the characteristics and measures of a successful research centre.

Sustainable Production
This session purpose is to provide a possibility for researchers to discuss how sustainability is and can be measured and evaluated in the aspect of production as well as in corresponding research areas. Here Production incorporates product development and production systems as well as manufacturing processes.  Special emphasis will be put on how measurement of sustainability, especially development of awareness, can be improved, today vs. tomorrow. The importance of including all aspects of sustainability, ecological, economical and social will be stressed.

The measures discussed could include manufacturing industry today or evaluation of production and manufacturing research. The discussion could include both how measures can be used to meet the given aims and how it could contribute to innovative production. Other important aspects are to discuss different detail levels and how to design tailored measures.

The workshop will involve presentations regarding the areas of measuring sustainability, an introduction of how to measure awareness/knowledge regarding sustainable production and product development as well as team exercises.

Purpose: provide a possibility for researchers to discuss how sustainability is and can be measured and evaluated in the aspect of product and production development as well as in corresponding research.

Aim:  Learn one way of measuring the awareness/knowledge of sustainable production as well as develop how to measure sustainability.

Future Product Realization Platforms
This purpose of this workshop is to provide a possibility for researchers to discuss future product realization platforms in terms of knowledge contents, platform design and operational use. Envisioned platform strategies with envisioned benefits and obstacles in different industrial contexts are key issues. So are IT support strategies with different approaches for integration and collaboration both throughout the product lifecycle and within the supply chain.

We look forward to interesting discussions based on current industrial experience and research approaches. Introductory presentations will be given by representatives from both academia and industry. These will be followed by group discussions and a concluding workshop summary in plenum.  The workshop summary will be documented and put on the conference website.

Purpose: Provide a possibility for researchers to discuss the topic “Future Product Realization Platforms” and ongoing research, as well as future research needed, within this field.

Aim:  Create a common picture of ongoing Nordic platform research and thereby form a base for potential future research collaboration within the field.

Lean Product Development
The purpose of this workshop is to orient researchers about one of the new trends in product development - Lean Product Development (LPD).
Or is it more than a trend? People from academia and the business community see patterns from a new paradigm emerge, where a more dynamic /lean approach is “the only way” to “compete on the edge of chaos”.

This is a forum to discuss how LPD can be applied by Nordic product developers and where more research is needed.  LPD is an American name for techniques and philosophies that are mainly inspired by Toyota’s successful product development organization, but the term is still fairly open regarding the specific contents of it. Are all the techniques and tools we know from the American-Japanese LPD useful to us? Are there even some that do not really fit in here? How does one get started with LPD? Or is the really tricky question more about how the strategy for product development is formulated and how we manage our product development organizations?

Before the discussion there will be some introductory presentations of LPD, about what it is and its present position in Sweden in terms of industrial use, research and education.

Purpose: Orient researchers about one of the new trends in product development - Lean Product Development (LPD) – and provide a forum for them to discuss how this can be applied by Nordic product developers.

Aim: Those attending should afterwards know the basic ideas behind LPD and its position today in our part of the world.
